Friday Face Off - Portrait Challenge.

When Nicole announced the portrait challenge, I was thinking that I would be doing well to finish a portrait in time.  However, I decided that my portrait just needed to be a face that looked reasonably good. After I did the first one, I was hooked.  Working in different media allowed me to explore some possibilities.  I have a few to show you.

First up is a series of three created from the same face.
Acrylic Paint on good watercolor paper

Mixed media (oil pastels, colored pencils and water media)

Inktense pencils and Inktense blocks

Next up,  an older lady
Colored pencil on very cheap watercolor paper.

And finally a male face.
Done with very inexpensive crayon on the back side of that cheap watercolor paper

There is a reason that I mention the inexpensive materials that I used for a couple of these. It is to remind you that you don't have to have expensive materials to create fun art.
However, I will say choose your substrate (paper in this case) with care as it determines how
well the materials will work for you.

Hi Gene! I like them all, but my favorite one is the 3rd one, that you did using Inktense pencils and blocks. I like the Picasso feel of it, with it's cubist lines and shapes.

OMGosh Cool Way. :) Your new name I guess. LOL These are magnificent! Thank you for sharing your tools and papers with us. Yes, one dose not have to have expensive art supplies to create. Even some of the masters created on less desirable surfaces. I know an artiste here that dose some of his work on brown paper bags and they sell for thousands of dollars. Anyway back to your art. The first 3 ladies are wonderful. Each one has a little bit of change but I know it's the same person. The old lady with her big lipstick lips is excellent, with a great smile and expression. Again your colorful guy is so catching. His mouth and stash remind me a bit of Freddy Mercury. I'm thrilled at what you created and shared for FFO portrait challenge. Thank you so much and have a great weekend.

My favourite is the third one done with Inktense.

Wow wow wow - way too cool, as Nicole would say and she's so right. The younger woman reminds me of one of my aquaintances, and in all three versions! I like how you used different supplies and even different paper, that's so interesting. You are so right, it is possible to create fun art with cheaper material, so that should never be an excuse. I really like all five of your portraits.

Well, I sometimes have to be reminded what a difference the materials you use can make. I get in a rut and use just water colors or pastels and I miss out on all kinds of options. Thank you for reminding all of us. Your portraits are all awesome and I would be hard pressed to pick a favorite. Job well done, Gene ...
