New Creations

Due to our host's confusion caused by stress, the Friday Face Off is happening on Thursday this week. Fortunately I have some work ready to share.

For several nights I stayed at Mom's as I was the only one available to sit with her. This is prime time for drawing using my iPad and digital pencil.  I must say that the digital pencil was a good choice for me. I have the Apple Pencil.  When I bought it I thought "that is a lot of money for a plastic stick."  For me, it has proved worthwhile.   I love the ways I can use it for sketching, drawing, "painting" etc. So, here are this weeks offerings.

The first is a reworking of a previous piece that was a re-make from one of my quilted faces.  I changed her hair, both style and color. She has new eyes and eyebrows. I reshaped the nose and lips also. So she is in essence a new creation.

I love flowers and on my iPad, I had a photo of a hibiscus that I took in Mexico years ago.  I used it as my reference and created this piece.

I used a gaussian blur to give it a soft dream-like quality.

This lady is a reworking of a pen sketch that I have shown in the past. I used that sketch as a reference and drew her again digitally.  Of course I had to add some color and changed her skirt a bit in the process.

More “Art”

Lots more play on my iPad. Here are my offerings
I used a pen sketch as a pattern, then added color.

Another bubbles and fishes composition. I love making these bubbles.

For this I used an old high school photo of myself as a guide. I removed the glasses though.

Another of my pen sketches used as a guide.

Friday Fun with Art

I have been having fun with digital art again.  Until Wednesday night when I had a panic moment. There is a special adapter that I used to charge the Apple Pencil.  I went to get it from my backpack and it wasn't there!  Yikes, what to do?  I thought about it a bit and decided that I had probably left it at Mom's.  You see the charge lasts a good while and that was the last place I had charged it. So, I went to bed and tossed a bit.  I considered calling my brother, but knowing that he was going on a trip Thursday morning, I didn't want to interrupt his sleep.
I got to sleep and slept thru the night. The first thing I thought about was "is it at Mom's?"  So I texted him. He said that he thought so.  Whew!
At lunch on Thursday, I was at Mom's so I looked. Yes!!! it was there. I grabbed it and put it by the door. It is now safely home. LOL.  I ordered an aftermarket spare to have at Mom's house.

Now onto the art pieces I have created.   This first one uses some "digital stamps" that I have altered, cobbled together and painted.

Next is a re-do of one that I created using one of my quilted faces as a guide.
I changed her hair and her lips and altered the angle of her head.

you can see the original HERE

And finally the latest piece that was completed is an underwater scene based on some real elements but put together in a pure fantasy combination. I really love this one.
There is transparency, lots of layers and fun use of depth.
The bubbles were learned in an online class, and I have to say, I love them.
I need to finish the class, but I am not sure when I will have the time to do it.

By the way, I can offer you a link for a free one month trial of Creative Bug (where I took this class)

I am linking up with Nicole for the Friday Face Off.  Even the fishes and eels in my drawing have faces.

Friday's Digital Art

This week I have three digital art pieces to share with you. All of these were created on my iPad using the  Procreate app and an Apple Pencil.

And just for the fun of it, an interesting graphic design that I created to see what I could do using the symmetry tool.

A Couple of Faces

Life has changed for me and I am often to busy to do my usual creation processes (sewing, weaving, etc)  But I can still sneak in a few minutes for creating art.  So I try to be a part of the Friday Face Off each week.

This week I am sharing two faces that I created on my iPad.    The first face is a male face that I created using some brush stamps for some of the basic elements.  However, I did alter those stamps to make the face I wanted.

Next up is a face that I created especially for Nicole, founder of the Face Off. Nicole likes weird, macabre, interesting art.  So I dashed this one off in a relatively short period of time last week while I was playing with brushes to see what effects I could get.

Happy Friday to you all!

Digital Art Faces

I am having such a good time creating digital art.  For me, it is a nice relaxing way to lose myself in creativity with no fear of mistakes. Oh, I make plenty of mistakes, but it is easy enough to erase the last few marks you made and fix it. Of course that works much better for me when I remember to use a new layer for each new element.
I used a photo of my Mom as a starting point for this first piece. It looks enough like her that she said "Is that me?"
The left eye is a bit off but I didn't try to fix it since I had other things on that layer. (oops, lesson learned, well sort of.)

The next piece was based on a pen sketch that I used a while back for the Friday Face Off.
I reworked it digitally and added color.  I really like the result.

I am linking up with Nicole for the Friday Face Off (which at the time of this writing isn't posted yet.)

Playing with Digital Paint

Greetings.  As you may know, I have been spending a lot of time doing care giving for my Mom.  I decided that I needed a very portable art medium that I can carry almost anywhere.  I had heard about the Apple pencil to use on the iPad. Since I have an relatively new iPad that goes with me to Mom's when I am staying there, I decided that could be my answer.  Then I heard someone on a video mention the program Procreate.  It is an app for the iPad that comes with LOTS of tools and features.  I have only scratched the surface of what is possible with it.
By the way, I didn't buy the expensive Apple pencil, I found an aftermarket brand on Amazon that was on sell for $7.49 at the time.  It seems to work very well for me. The Procreate program was only $12.99 which I think is a great bargain.

So here is my first creation that I started when I knew almost nothing about the program.
It isn't a masterpiece, but I do like the effects I was able to get with the program and the pencil.

Then I decided to try using a photo reference as a starting point for a face.
(Happy Friday Face Off to you!)
If she looks familiar,  it is because I based her on one of my quilt faces.
However I did change her hair a bit as you can see from the quilt face shown below:

This and That

I realize that my blog has been idle frequently.  Sometimes life gets in the way.  These days I am spending more of my time with Mom as she is requiring more care.  Her memory is failing greatly these days. Thus she needs help a lot more.  I am blessed to still have her in my life, so I am not complaining, just letting you know.

Speaking of Mom, I bought her a small puzzle (just 350 pieces) at the dollar store.  I thought the bright colors and fun picture would be one she would enjoy.

This was actually more difficult than it looks.  I was happy that Mom was able to find and place some pieces on her own. She was thrilled also.

I have been working on myself also. I was offered a gym membership through my insurance.  I said "Why not?  I will go two or three days a week, maybe."  Ha ha - I think I found a new addiction.

I am at the gym almost every day unless I have something else that I have to do.  Last month, I think that I missed 2 or 3 days. It is nice to see my muscles toning up and gaining strength.

Quilt Pieces - No Plan

Somedays you just need to do something creative. The day this happened I had some scraps on my table and said "Hmmmm.... I could just sew those together."  Then things happened as I said "What if....?"  Suddenly I had to chunks made and pressed and sort of trimmed.  Certainly more trimming could happen OR more pieces could be sewn onto either of them.

The tilted cross block was first. I started with the green and purple. Then I saw that orange strip and said "Oooh, I want to add that into this!"  And I did.

One piece was trimmed off that block before the photo. There was more of the green, some purple and a white on white strip. The blue batik was a strip trimmed from a quilt backing.
One piece of green was cut with a wavy edge. Hmmmm... I placed it on top of part of the blue batik and matched the curves. I love the motion that adds to the piecing.

Where will these go?  As yet, I don't know. I do NOT have a plan but I am sure they will find a home in a nice wildly scrappy quilt like this one or maybe this one.

Puzzled Faces

About a week ago, my Mom told my brother that she wanted to put a puzzle together. She picked one that my nephew had made for her with a picture of him, me, and Mom.  This puzzle has 1014 pieces and because of several elements, it is a difficult puzzle. However, the three of us, Mom, my brother and I finally got it together - for the second time.

The wall, and our clothing made this quite a difficult puzzle. However, the photo is a good one as we all are smiling and look nice.

Memories - Faces

One of my favorite places to go is in Mexico on the Yucatan peninsula.   A friend and I have found a place where we love to be - when time and finances permit. We have taken many photos during our visits. Since he is the photographer, I am in more of the photos. He is "camera shy."

We visited the train museum which was a open but just to wander through - no guides.

At a local art museum I was taking a photo of these big dolls.  One of the workers insisted that I let her take a photo with me in it.  I have a big head, but these folks are the clear winners in this big head contest.

This, as I am sure you can tell, is NOT me. These two guys run a loncheria (a place to eat lunch.) We often used their services as the food was good and the service was excellent.

Look out!

If you didn't know how silly/goofy I can be, here is photographic proof. I stuck my socks on my ears and made a face while goofing off with a friend - of course he had the camera ready and snapped this.
Embrace your childlike side.

Sketchy Faces

I have been doing a few quick sketch faces. I did these just for fun and usually just imagined faces. One face however was inspired while I was streaming a video.

Using an "economy of line"

Inspired by a character in a streaming show.

Hmm.. he seems angry.

Dejected

The one below is for Nicole

Just a bit weird.

The hairstyle looks like the late 60's

Trunk Show for a Quilt Guild

On Tuesday, April 9th,  I had the pleasure of presenting a trunk show for a local quilt guild. The plans for this started way back in June of 2023.  The lady who was scheduling the programs for the guild had seen my work in the local public library display.  We probably emailed at least 20 times prior to the event.
I must say it was certainly a fun time.  I arrived early so that I got to see all of the show and tell quilts and items from the guild members.

Here are the photos of some of my presentation.

This next quilt is one that I haven't shown on my blog previously.

It was created from lots of pieces from practicing free motion quilting. The first photo is the "back"

Then here is the front. Honestly either side can be used as the front and face up on the bed.

Below is my Roy G Biv quilt. The colors of the rainbow set on a field of black.

Below is another bright and colorful quilt in a bargello style. (the group went "oooooh!")

Next is the back of a quilt - no picture of the front of this one here. Bu you can find it

Yes we looked at LOTS of quilts and had a great time.
As my face is in lots of these photos, I am linking to the Friday Face Off with Nicole.
