Art Exhibit Tour and Friday Face Off

This week, I gave a tour of my art exhibit to some people who traveled about an hour from a town south of us.  It was a delight to share about my works, and answer questions from the participants.

These two items sold at the end of the tour.
First up is this painting:

Standing On The Brink

This vest also sold, the black with vivid colors was perfect for the happy purchaser.
As I have no way to hang my hand woven clothing at this venue,  I carried a few pieces to show. I am so glad that I thought to take some of my woven works.

While we were discussing the quilts, one lady asked "How can I wash a quilt?" Before I could answer she stated "I was told to NEVER put it in the washing machine."  I said, "Almost every quilt in this exhibit, other than the wall hangings, has been washed in the washing machine and dried in the dryer."
Apparently the maker told her that the colors would probably run if she put it in the washing machine. So she had washed this kingsized quilt in the bathtub.  I wanted to ask why it wouldn't run in the tub - it is still water and soap......  But I was nice and kept my mouth shut. I did give her advice to save the quilt if the colors happen to run. Those are from Vicki Welsh at Colorways by Vicki- Save my Bleeding Quilt.

So for the Face Off today, I am going to post the video of my exhibit, but first here is a photo of some of the faces on display.

Sigh, the video is taking a LONG time to upload.  I hope to have it here before this posts, but if not, it will be posted on my blog in a few days.

Friday Face Off 2/17/23

I am happy to say that I have a new little face to add to my collection of quilted cuties.
When I stayed with Mom one night, I took my bin of pre-fused fabric and pre-fused scraps with me. While mom was reading in the living room, I was creating with scissors and a mini iron in the dining room.

I took the first photo at home after the outline quilting was complete.
Hi, my name is Marla.

Then I looked at the back and thought, why not show a look behind the curtain.
With a solid fabric on back it is easier to see the quilting lines.

Then I finished quilting this lovely red haired lady.

Life gets in the way

Sometimes we plan to do things and life gets in the way.   I normally have "something new" for the Friday Face Off.  However, Mom had an issue and my brother and I are taking turns staying with her.  That means when I am home I am either busy with the essentials or catching up on sleep.

Today I will be showing a couple of photos from my exhibit here in town at the public library.  I haven't had time to do a video tour.  Although yesterday I was there for a small live tour with Q & A.  After the tour, three pieces were purchased.  So here is the picture of those.

These were already grouped together so I had the photo.  I am happy to see these go to a good home, although I will miss them.

Here is another photo of some of the faces on display. I am adding this photo for the Face Off.

Quilt-Art Exhibit

My exhibit at the local Public Library is underway and  getting at least some attention.  I am happy to report that I have sold one small piece of quilt art.  The piece "Hills and Fields" has been sold and delivered.  The photo of it, hanging on my wall is below. It is a bit lighter than it appears on my monitor.

Hills and Fields

This piece has both machine work and hand embroidery creating a colorful abstract image.

I hope to have a video in coming days to give you a walk through of the exhibit.

Friday Face Off

Welcome back for another fun Friday Face Off.  As always,  I am linking this to the Friday Face Off hosted by Nicole at  DVArtist  Clicking the link will take you to her blog.  It is great fun to see how various people interpret the challenge.

Today I am pulling out another painting that should probably be in my exhibit, if there was room for her.  This is "Green-Eyed Serena" - one of my partial face paintings in watercolor. Years ago, I took a class with Janet Rogers on flowers and portraits. In the class, we saw one of her paintings that was a partial face.  I fell in love with the idea.  The class convinced her to give us a demo on painting one of these. At the end of the week, I went home and painted several, sometimes using photos of acquaintances as the basis for my partial face.  This one is just from my imagination.

This watercolor is framed behind glass.  I tried to get a good photo with as little glare as possible. However the color came out a bit to the magenta/lavender side of things.

Happy Friday to you all.

Baby Quilt Update

The baby quilt is coming along nicely.  Due to the sizes of the pieces of fabric I had in the colors I wanted, I had to make a design change.  Instead of half-square triangles in the corners, I  used more of the four-patch blocks.   The top only needs the borders added to be complete. Then it will be ready to layer and quilt.

The thing that I decided to do on the applique blocks was to outline them with black just like I do on my face quilts. As there was no batting behind them,  each one was backed with a piece of tearaway/washaway embroidery stabilizer to make sure that the free-motion work didn't cause the fabric to pucker.  That worked really well.

Here is a closeup of the Red Puppy and you can see how I outlined him.  You may also notice that I missed clipping a "jump thread" where I moved from the tail to the ear.  Just so you know, that has been clipped now.

Even though the Sunbonnet Sue design was cheater cloth, I did all of the outlines on it also.  That makes it look more like the other applique pieces.

I am having a great time making this baby quilt.

Today I stopped by the library to take a quick look at my exhibit.  However, there was a couple there looking. So I introduced myself and offered to answer any questions they might have about my work.
It was fun to discuss my quilts with them.  A bonus joy was finding out that the man knew my father. Although Dad is no longer with us, I still find people that remember him fondly.
Yes, it really is a small world after all.
