What do these tools mean?
They mean that I am actually sewing the binding to the back of a quilt by hand.
I learned the value of a thimble in the process. You will notice there are two in the first photo. The metal one fits my finger best and works best for me. My reading indicates that thimbles are a very personal choice.

Yup, I sew the binding on the back by hand, and I use a metal thimble while doing so. A couple times of piercing my finger under the nail with the wring end of the needle made me a believer in thimbles.
Yes, I also sew my binding by hand, but I don't use a thimble to do it. However, I always use one for hand quilting.
I can't seem to use a thimble for any kind of sewing...not even for hand-quilting. BUT...I do like sewing the back of the binding down by hand as I prefer the look I get with that. For kids' quilts, though, I know they might get a lot of heavy use, so I have done some of them by machine as I figure it holds up better that way.

My success with a thimble is nil. I'm highly unskilled in the use - gave up years ago. Perhaps it goes back to being taught to sew by my "left handed" mom. The thimble is useless on the wrong hand!
Yep, Gene, I use my thimble everytime I hand sew.
I use very small needles and really need to protect my finger from serious needle stabs.
My thimble is made of a VERY heavy leather. It's very thick, but does soften as I wear it and fits my finger 'like a glove'
I also have my granma's steel thimbles.

I also do my bindings on the back by hand and use a thimble. I actually use a couple of different sized thimbles depending on if my hands are swollen or not. They are actually old metal ones that I have had for years and years. I learned to sew with a thimble and just kept the habit.
I love my metal one but also use a rubber one...can't stand a loose thimble.
I actually have an old leather thimble that I used when I did some hand quilting. It has a little metal piece to protect the tip. I find it much easier to use then the metal ones.
I make the first binding seam on the machine and then the finishing seam by hand. I use a metal thimble but I have considered using one of the stick-on thimbles that I've seen at quilt shows. I wonder how they work.
I don't use a thimble, I think that finger is finally "hard" enough that it don't bother it. lol.......I do have some of the stick on ones though, sometimes I'll place one on my thumb above my finger nail, cause the needle always goes in there once coming out of the fabric.
I have "many" thimbles and I tend to use at least three when hand sewing because the finger that doesn't have a thimble gets stuck.... LOL
I push with my thumb instead of my middle finger when hand quilting. I use the small dark leather thimble that has a spot for fingernail to peak out. It has a metal tip on the underside.
I also use, under the quilt, several pads cut from bandaids and then the white strip (for over large band-aids) tape to hold the several pads on. I dunno, this might not make sense? =(

I haven't hand quilted in a long time but when I did I always used a leather thimble that has a small piece of metal in it. I seldom sew on binding by hand but if I do I don't use a thimble. Have fun!
I always sew my binding to the back by hand. I don't use a real thimble but I use a little leather dot that sticks to my finger and protects it the same as a thimble. I could never find a regular thimble I liked or that I thought fit correctly.
