Grid POP - Quilting Fun

I think I am addicted to free motion quilting.   Over the long weekend, I was tempted again.  So I signed up for yet another free motion quilting class. This one is called  Divide and Conquer by Lori Kennedy.  She teaches how to break up your space for quilting more easily and filling the spaces.  This works for both wholecloth quilts -which is what she works on for the class - but also works great for pieced quilts.  A couple of the designs she shows for half square triangle blocks are great fun.

Today I needed a bit of creative playtime again - but I didn't want to work on the brown one as I am still making decisions about the design.   There was this nice practice sandwich in my pile ready to go, so I went for it.
You may notice some lines drawn on it. One of the things I learned is that you can mark a straight line grid to start a design.  Now, I knew you could mark a quilt - but seriously - I had never tried it.  What surprised me was that I was able to free motion quilt those straight lines almost flawlessly.
Practice has paid off in other areas too. I can travel back over stitching lines much better than I could a few weeks ago.
Now, lets talk about the grid.  Do you see the POP of the design?  The unquilted squares rise up above the surface, while the quilted squares are pushed down.  This creates a great texture.

Another thing you may notice is that my needle is down in this picture:

Why is that?  I am trying to decide what I will quilt around the grid design.  The opportunities are  almost endless.

And finally, here is a close-up of the quilting.  I used a chaco-liner to mark the lines.  I think it has to be washed out.  Sigh! I need a chalk pencil that will brush away for this.  Or maybe I could use my tailor's chalk...  Now why didn't I think of that earlier!

I am having fun with this - So I challenge you to show us your quilting!

Perhaps you are interested in the thread choice here.  This is a  Connecting Threads Essential Cotton thread.  It is a 50 weight thread in a three ply (50/3) It is a satin finish-double mercerized which givea a nice sheen.  The color I am using is Cream (20976) and I buy it in cones. Right now it is on sale for $6.99 for a 5000 yard cone.  But it is also available in 1200 yard spools which are ons sale right now for $1.95 Both cones and spools come in a lovely variety of colors.

Now this is how I like my quilting. I love that we can fill up squares, but I like a little bit of "pop" to my quilts, I want to say it's quilted, without it looking as flat as a pancake. You can use Tailors chalk, that's what I use myself, but I mark as I go, because my premarking and then leaving it for awhile, the chalk will wear off and you end up remarking. If you keep the chalk sharp also, you'll get better lines. Best Wishes and keep on FMQing. :)
