As you may know, I am doing the Layer Cake Quilt Along at Moose on the Porch Quilts. As I designed the first block, I didn't do it the week my design appeared. The original block was not in the fabrics that I am using for the quilt along, so I decided to make it again in the proper fabrics. Now I have a block that will blend well with the other blocks in my "quilt along" quilt. It is not perfect but it is just fine with me.
The center is also fussy cut from the same line of fabric. Those flowers will appear in another block somewhere along the way.
Quilt alongs are exciting to me. Plus, for me anyway, it is an easy way to make a quilt without pressure to "get it done." The last quilt along was over before I was ready for it to be over.
How do you feel about quilt alongs? Does not knowing what the various blocks will look like affect your feelings about it?

Love your block, Gene! I'm not a quilt along type. At least not now. I have tooooo much on my plate!!
I want to be able to do them. I had huge intentions to do this one...until my machine broke again. I think it's fixed now. But, I'm frustrated because I wanted to do this one and Quiltvilles. Now I'm behind on both. Sigh.
As you know, I didn't like my blocks with the previous quilt-along but that is because I ran out of enough contrasting fabric in my jelly roll well before the blocks were all revealed to us. I then had to find other fabrics and never found ones I felt looked right with my jelly roll fabrics. I think I do better with mystery quilts where I buy yardages of fabrics and am told how many lights and how many mediums and how many darks....as sometimes the layer cakes and jelly rolls don't seem to have enough of each. (I bet you are sorry you asked the question, huh?) I do love your block on this post, though....very nice fabrics.
Another great block! I like that color combo and the balance looks just right to me.
This is my first quilt along, although I tried to do the last MOTP QA, but had too much going on and no fabric budget.
For me, it can be a little scary not knowing what the blocks will look like ahead of time, but since all the fabrics coordinate, I'm okay with it. It's really not much different than a Block of the Month club. I also love seeing how all the different fabrics change the look of the block and also how some quilters take the design and run (sometimes away) with it.
I also like the low key approach. You can go at your own pace, unless you want to try to get a prize, which I like. 2 weeks to a month (depending on the QA)to finish one block seems pretty easy.
As of now, with only 2 QA blocks under my belt, I will say that I enjoy the suspense. I may not like all the blocks when all is said and done, but it will be a fun learning experience.
nice block Gene.
great block! don't do quilt alongs, too much on my plate....besides my daughter already calls me the Queen of Blocks.
I love quilt alongs, and I made your block as soon as it was out. Since I wanted to make the last MOTP into a bed sized quilt, I was delighted that she started another one so soon, and I will put all of the blocks together.
did someone say "fussy cut"? oh my, I struggled with this last week, I emailed Pat for help and she had some great tips, I just could not make it work. that block looks great and I normally don't have patience for a quilt-a-long or I'm not skilled enough to keep up
Gene, nice block. I've never done a quilt-along but it sounds like a mini version of a mystery quilt. Now, I HAVE started mystery quilts, but I've yet to finish one; I believe a quilt-along would be more my speed right now.
This is my first one and I am enjoying it so far! I love mystery quilts, so this is right up my alley!
I love this version of your block
I really like your block. The color balance is perfect. I've not done much fussy cutting but have a project lined up that will need it. I've never done a quilt-along. I'm sure it would be interesting not knowing what you would be making next. It would also help to get a quilt finished.
That's a great block!
I love layer cakes to work with, but I'm hesitant to do a quilt-along that is a mystery. I just don't have enough time to sew everything I want, so I don't want to take the chance that I won't like the finished design. Otherwise, I've done one quilt-along, but I knew the design ahead of time. And I'd probably be fine with the mystery aspect if I was not so pressed for time.
By the way, Kelly of IHAN sent me here. Nice blog!
Your block is beautiful - love the colors! I enjoy quilt alongs like this one that don't give you a new block to make almos every other day. Having a new block every other week seems about the right speed for me.
I love a good quilt along! And have done many, in fact they have turned into some of my most favorite quilts. Love your block Gene!
I love surprises so any form of interactive quilting is fun for me, but I know a lot of folks who don't like doing what they can't see in advance. This is going to be very nice! I especially like the fussy-cut center.
I've never done a quilt along Gene, except I've done a mystery quilt with my guild and I loved it! blessings, marlene
I love quilt-alongs, did the jelly roll and now doing the layer cake. Your block is so fantastic, would love to see you post a quilt-along.
