I now love this little lap quilt. I hope Mom loves it too. More after the pictures, but for now LOOK!
You see, my parents and I have a "deal." They told me "We don't want you to buy us anything for Christmas. We aren't going shopping so, just come to see us. Don't buy us a present."
I am keeping the "deal" in my own way. I didn't go and buy them a present. I made it. It can stay on the sofa and be for them both.
Do you think I am a bad son? I know I am sort of circumventing the deal, but I made it and I want them to have it. Does that make me bad?

Gene, definitely you are not.... but if your mum refuses the lovely quilt (cos she wants you just to be home), out there 'other mums' willing to accept the beautiful 'made-by-own-son' quilt.... how lucky your mum is!

My parents are in their 70's and have everything that they need and can afford to buy most things that they want. Over the time that I have quilted, I have made them 3 large quilts and two wall hangings. I occasionally think of making them a couch quilt. I think it is a lovely idea and they will love your quilt. Something handmade is always special.

Nice work Gene...Mama said don't 'buy' them a gift... Didn't say don't 'make' or 'give' us a gift.. I think you're in the clear... If nothing else tell them its not a Christmas gift but rather 'you survived the holidays' gift!!!

I don't think you broke your deal unless buying thread counts. It looks like you used a great deal of that! I love the crinkly result of your meandered improvisational quilting.
It's a personal preference to hope for a "crinkly" result. Not pre-washing fabrics helps.

Well it turned out amazing if I do say so myself. I have some of that blue star fabric in a quilt my mom made me.
It's just beautiful and will make a wonderful gift and surprise. I'd rather have something made anyway!

My mother is over 80 and LOVES getting homemade gifts too. We have a deal too, we don't buy her anything that has to go back to the mall since it's not her favorite place to go and she won't spend unnecessarily on me. I love your quilt and I know mom and dad will too.

Not a bad son. I'm doing that same type of "deal" with my sister. She doesn't want me spending money on her and her family - no problem, I am crafty and can MAKE presents! Your re-quilting turned out great.
